PRIX PICTET PUBLISHES THE BOOK ‘HUMAN.KIND.’ WITH INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT MUSEUM, SWITZERLAND

Published by Thames & Hudson

Publications – 03 Jul 2024 at the Arles Festival of Photography, 2024, France

This landmark cultural project showcases the work of thirty of over 3,000 photographers from around the world who have been nominated for the Prix Pictet. Human.Kind. brings together almost 300 images by thirty photographers from twenty-four countries, all of whom have been nominated for one of the ten cycles of the Prix Pictet, since it was first awarded in 2008.

Documentary photographs, portraits and photo montages address the major issues of humanitarian action, from conflict and climate change to psychological support and respect for human dignity. These works, selected and co-curated by William A. Ewing and Elisa Rusca, form the book and corresponding exhibition, which is on show at the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum in Geneva, Switzerland through to 25 August 2024.

From a deep dive into the Prix Pictet archives, Ewing and Rusca have made a diverse, thought-provoking selection of work by the thirty photographers, all leading contemporary practitioners, each of whom have created work that responds to the challenge of the need for humanity and compassion in photography.

With essays by Ewing and Rusca, commentaries by the photographers and texts by Marie- Laure Salles, Pascal Hufschmid (Director of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum), Isabelle von Ribbentrop (Executive Director of the Prix Pictet), Michael Benson (Director of the Prix Pictet) and Renaud de Planta (Senior Partner at Pictet Group), this is a compelling survey of contemporary photography that underlines the power the medium has to move us and to effect positive change in the world.

 FOTOPOESÍA

OCTAVIO PAZ in INDIA (A Photo-Poetry Installation)

To celebrate the birth centenary of Nobel Laureate and former Mexican Ambassador to India, Octavio Paz, Institute Cervantes in New Delhi and Embassy of Mexico in India launched a photo-poetry installation project to establish dialogues between photography and poetry by bringing together the works of Indian photographers and a Spanish or Latin American poet. As a part of the project, in July 2014 the Instituto Cervantes approached me, fellow photographer Adil Hasan and poet Sudeep Sen to do a free translation of poems by Octavio Paz, or being inspired by it to make a photo series. The poetries chosen for me were “THE BALCONY” and “THE MAUSOLEUM OF HUMAYUN”

A MOMENT IN TIME

A Moment in Time brings together a suite of exquisite and evocative images of Subrata Biswas, Prashant Godbole, Pallon Daruwala and Abhishek Dasgupta. For decades, these photo artists, through their art, have enticed and motivated the viewer to celebrate and contemplate the ever-changing moods and relationships between man, nature and the human condition. This show collates a set of significant and inspired bodies of work of each of these artists as they have captured vignettes of contemporary life, focusing on the essence and experience of a moment in time. Their images are consequently expressive and eloquent, lyrical and mystical, soulful and seductive. In grappling with and grasping astonishing moments often seen in the most familiar and unremarkable situations of daily life, the photographers have offered us glimpses of our external world. The images in the show which emanate out of a thoughtful study of man and nature throw light on our interior landscapes as well; they also provide openings to think about ourselves in a
deeper way.
